Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Universe

May 9, 2017

“I am worried about you Christina, I love your other work and I won’t stop reading you there but this? Well, I have to unsubscribe from here.” someone wrote to me the other day. “I wish you the very best.” she concluded. She has not been the only one who has written these type of letters to me. I have had others. Not many but still enough to wonder why. At first, I found it really hard to understand why would someone unsubscribe from a blog about the stars. It made no sense, not even a little. And sometimes that is all I need, to understand something just a little. But this was hard to figure out. You see to me the stars have all the answers. They are always watching over us and no matter what happens in our lives they are there every night. I started looking at the stars more and more when I had a bad day. I would go outside and sit on my chair and just look at them. I would always cry at first but then something would take me over and I would find my way to the bigger picture of my life. It was almost as if time stood still and I could look at everything from a place outside of time. I felt safe sitting out there. And I knew I was not alone. Slowly I started to learn more about our universe as I read books to understand where we came from. I read about the Big Bang, the String Theory and all the different possible dimensions we have but can’t see. And the more I read the more I wanted to read. One thing that I discovered was that stars were not simple things. Some of these books were difficult to read. You had to read some pages over and over again. But of course, that didn’t stop me it just helped me understand why some people felt that the cosmos was not something they wanted to know more of. Maybe the emails I got from some of my readers had to do with the complexity of the cosmos and how it felt foreign to them. All I knew was that I had to find a way to get people connected with our sky more. I truly believe that there is so much joy and calm that can come from the stars and from knowing how big our universe is. One of my favorite authors is Neil deGrasse Tyson. I have never met him. But have seen him on TV many times. He has a way about him. He gets to talk about our universe in ways that allow us to understand it better. He just released a new book called Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. He starts the book with this sentence and it gives us such perspective: “In the beginning, nearly fourteen billion years ago, all the space and all the matter and the energy of the known universe was contained in a volume less than one-trillionth the size of the period that ends this sentence.” Now that is one way to get our attention. I mean think about this. We were so small, almost invisible. Almost non-existent and then boom we became larger than anything we can imagine. Neil deGrasse Tyson continues to write like this throughout his whole book. He talks about dark energy, the elements, the billions of galaxies and of course he mentions how life possibly started on Mars. “Collectively these findings tell us that life started on Mars and later seeded life on earth a process known as panspermia.” I know these are big claims but he backs them up with findings. He doesn’t stop there he continues his relentless description of our universe including what it means to have a cosmic perspective. Being able to see our existence from another vantage point. A cosmic one. “The cosmic perspective enables us to see beyond our circumstances, allowing us to transcend our primal search for food, shelter and a mate.” (Click to Tweet!) He asks us to continue being curious and to always seek to explore beyond this earth and this galaxy. For there is so much more out there for us to discover. Thank you, Neil deGrasse Tyson, for spending your life on Earth helping us all understand our universe a little better. And as for those of you out there that all of this is still a little too much to grasp please before you go to bed tonight just take a look at the stars on top of your house and imagine a bigger world that awaits you. What It Means to Be a Cosmic Seer

May 2, 2017

Some people ask me the reason why I talk about the stars so much. Why do I mention space exploration in my conversations so often?   To me, it is rather strange how we don’t talk about the stars more. How we don’t find it surprising that we are so small in contrast to the whole universe. There is so much mystery surrounding our existence. Instead, we live life as if everything is normal. As if the universe is not infinite and mysterious. We live our everyday life in hypnosis. Maybe there is something wrong. How we all live our days on repeat. Until the end. There has got to be something bigger than this looping experience. We just have to make time to just look up. (Click to Tweet!) I look up to find peace. I got myself a telescope. So I could see better. And I gasped when I saw the moon for the first time. To say it was an experience to see it up close would be an understatement. I can only imagine what all the astronauts feel when they see space up close. It must change their consciousness and their perception of the world. Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell returned to Earth a different person. The mission, which he once said was “akin to a religious experience,” sparked a euphoric episode. Actually, it was the trip home that did it. “I realized that [the] stars out there were the organizers and creators of my molecules — and suddenly it became personal. Instead of an intellectual awareness, it became a visceral acceptance.” He said that he became a cosmic seer when he had this experience. We are all meant to be cosmic seers. A knowing that we are all connected and this is much bigger than we can ever imagine. I am fully aware that we are not all able to space travel but we can all have access to a telescope. And looking at the stars through a telescope gives you a whole other view of your life, one you cannot get if you never look up. Edgar Mitchell had a way with words when it came to describing his experience. “Instead of an intellectual search, there was suddenly a very deep gut feeling that something was different. It occurred when looking at Earth and seeing this blue-and-white planet floating there, and knowing it was orbiting the Sun, seeing that Sun, seeing it set in the background of the very deep black and velvety cosmos, seeing - rather, knowing for sure - that there was a purposefulness of flow, of energy, of time, of space in the cosmos - that it was beyond man's rational ability to understand, that suddenly there was a nonrational way of understanding that had been beyond my previous experience.” I have dreamed my whole life about going to space. I look at all the space exploration news articles to see how we are advancing. I am selfish when it comes to that. I want to go and see earth from space. Something is pulling me there and I don’t even care what it is. All I know is that I want to go in this lifetime. To experience what Edgar Mitchell and others have experienced. To know what it feels like to be a cosmic seer. And like Joseph P. Allen once said “...for going to the moon, no one suggested that we should do it to look at the Earth. But that may in fact have been the most important reason of all.” I am not asking you to go to space or to change your religious beliefs or even your everyday life. All I am asking for is for you to find a way to look at the stars more often and more closely. I guarantee you it will change how you feel about your life and how you live it. This Is Not Your Only Reality

April 25, 2017

We live in a parallel universe that is holographic. We go to bed at night and enter dreams that take us to other worlds. We know that our consciousness never dies. We look up at the sky and see an infinite and vast world. And yet we turn away from all of the above and go inside the loop of our thoughts. Choosing to live in a reality that is repetitive and blunt. As if none of this is true. How dare we? How dare we live as if the earth is the only planet. As if we die when our bodies leave us. As if this is the only reality. Some might think that it serves us to live in this constant repetitive experience.   It’s easier than believing in this complex world of reality, illusion of dreams and out of body experiences. I stumbled upon one of Einstein’s early experiences. Did you know that it was a dream that inspired him and put him on this path? Imagine a dream. An illusion. An inner experience made Einstein think about the speed of light all of his life. “He dreamt that he was riding a sled down a steep, snowy slope and, as he approached the speed of light in his dream, the colors all blended into one. He spent much of his career, inspired by that dream, thinking about what happens at the speed of light.” “Einstein said his entire career was an extended meditation on a dream he had as a teenager,” explained the Rev. John W. Price on the radio show “Engines of Our Ingenuity.” Today I want to ask you about your own dreams. Do you ever take them seriously enough? Enough to allow for guidance and understanding of our human potential. And no I am not talking about purchasing a dream book from the bookstore. I am asking for a true delving into your dreams where other worlds show up and your other selves make an appearance. Don’t be scared of this. It’s part of who we are. Pretending that we don’t go to places beyond this reality while we are asleep doesn’t really serve our species. We stop our evolution every time we close our eyes and dismiss the experiences we are having while we are asleep. I found an article in Psychology Today that discusses the hypothesis that dreaming may be about events occurring in a real alternate world. If the many worlds framework is correct and dreaming consists of counterfactual simulations of what might have been and what might be for the dreamer in a world that branches off of the dreamer’s parent world then is it possible that dreams actually depict what is going on in the life of my counterpart? Could these be portals into a parallel universe? Could our dreams have answers to questions we have here in this universe? I have had many of these dreams where I got answers and discoveries. I know you have had those dreams too. Did you also know that In 1965, Paul McCartney composed the entire melody for the song Yesterday in a dream. He apparently woke up and the dream gave him the whole song. "For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something into the police. I thought if no-one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it." Even though we don’t know how it happens exactly and where it is that we go when we are asleep the fact is that we do go somewhere. And sometimes we come back with gems and treasures. The sad thing is that most of us dismiss these dreams and we throw them away in the morning. Let’s try to remember them. Try to make sense of them. Use them to answer some of the questions you are working on in your life. Let’s start from there. And my guess is that it will grow into a bigger experience. I now rely on my dreams to tell me what to write, how to teach my classes and when I see a dream like the dream when God visited me oh my dear friend I am in awe. I feel at peace. And know that this reality is beautiful because it connects us to infinite realities. I want you to know that you have access to a bigger world than the one you see right in front of you. (Click to Tweet!) Einstein, McCartney and so many others paid attention to their dreams and respected their validity letting them guide their lives. So if McCartney and Einstein and oh so many others did that, why not you and I? Why not? When you go to bed tonight pay attention to the reality you visit. You might just be given something very precious. We Are All Talking About the Same God

April 18, 2017

When I started writing my next book (coming out late 2018) I was determined to stay as close to science as possible, especially in regards to what happens to us when we die. But the more I read and researched the more I saw something I didn’t expect. However, I didn’t really say it out loud to anyone or even to myself. Then one night I had a dream where God visited me. I saw God take me by the hand and guide me under a doorway. While we were walking under the doorway I received this message. “I am here to take you into a new direction.” Imagine my surprise when I woke up. First of all, this was the first time I ever dreamed about God. And second of all, I don’t consider myself religious, so this was, to say the least, unexpected. But it got me questioning the things I believed in. I realized that the God I believe in is not just a story inside a book or a prayer inside my head. My God is my consciousness. My God is light that travels across our cosmos. My God lives in the particles and atoms that create the reality we live in. (Click to Tweet!) My God also created my brain, my cells and my DNA through my consciousness. I know this sounds unlike the biblical versions of what we are told. But I think we all are talking about the same God. Over the years I have received many emails asking me this one question: “Christina, do you believe in God?” and whenever I said yes the response has always been “but how come you don’t talk about God in your blogs?” My response to that always was “but I am.” I think there are many ways to talk about God. My way of talking about God is inside words like particles and atoms. As well as light, molecules and consciousness. God is consciousness and the observer in all of us. It is also the creator of this beautiful universe. Over the many thousands of years, we used story to express what God is. The stories didn’t include the definitions of particles and quantum physics but they did showcase the unexplained, the unseen and the miraculous.   Now that we talk about atoms without adding story to it does it mean we don’t believe in a God? In my humble opinion, we study God now more than ever before. I love what Eben Alexander said in his book Proof of Heaven. “Science—the science to which I’ve devoted so much of my life—doesn’t contradict what I learned up there. But far, far too many people believe it does, because certain members of the scientific community, who are pledged to the materialist worldview, have insisted again and again that science and spirituality cannot coexist.” Atoms, particles, molecules and the study of them does not take God away from our lives. As a matter of fact, it brings God closer. It gives us even more proof. 'My journey deep into coma, outside this lowly physical realm and into the loftiest dwelling place of the almighty Creator, revealed the indescribably immense chasm between our human knowledge and the awe-inspiring realm of God. The brain itself does not produce consciousness. That it is, instead, a kind of reducing valve or filter, shifting the larger, nonphysical consciousness that we possess in the nonphysical worlds down into a more limited capacity for the duration of our mortal lives.” As the Bible explains in 2 Corinthians 4:18 "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." The seen. This three-dimensional reality is nothing but a filtering process of the brain so we could experience life in this way. But it doesn’t mean we should forget our powers and abilities to move mountains, do impossible feats and above all find God inside of us, inside the light that hits our retina and translates it into this physical reality. As I remember my dream with God going under a doorway I realize that I take the reader through the most beautiful doorway in the beginning of the book. I didn’t put two and two together until right this moment while writing this Star Letter to you. If you are going to take something from this letter, let it be this message. God is everything you think he/she is. And everything you think he/she is not. In between the seen and the unseen. Before the big bang and after. Inside time and space and always outside of it.
